I have an interest in family names and ancestry, and I take pride in
mine. I'm part Irish, Scottish, English, Dutch and Swedish, and my family
name is of Irish origin. According to the Historical Research Center,
it's a form of the name "Arrell", which is an anglicization of the
Irish name "O'hEarghaill", which meant "man of valor". The Harrell
family crest appears on this page, and on the main home page. Click
on either to view the larger version (44kB). Variations in regional
pronunciations resulted in different forms of the same name. Another
surname found in the U.S. that has the same origin is Farrell.
